Case Study Overview

As a Senior User Experience Designer on the BBC TV Home Page project, the main challenge was to allow users to easily discover what's happening live on iPlayer, quickly jump on live programmes, and schedule the best programmes to watch in prime time. The solution provided a clear overview of prime time programmes through a carousel at the top of the page, followed by a list of programmes listed by channel. The focus was on what's on now and what will be on next.

To approach this challenge, I collaborated with the marketing team to analyze their requirements and researched user behaviors using provided data and previous research. I worked on concepts, wireframes, UX/UI/IX design, prototypes, mockups, MVT, and AB user testing. Throughout the project, I collaborated with creative direction, product managers, UX designers, user researchers, user testers, software engineers, and developers.

Main challenge

The primary challenge that I faced while working on the BBC TV Home Page was to enhance the user experience by enabling them to explore and discover live programmes effortlessly. One of the core objectives was to facilitate a seamless transition for the users to jump onto live programmes instantly and provide quick access to information about what's coming up next. Another challenge was to enable users to schedule their preferred programmes during prime time quickly and easily, ensuring that they never miss their favourite shows.

To address these challenges, my team and I focused on creating an intuitive and user-friendly interface that would provide a clear and comprehensive overview of live programmes, allowing users to navigate and explore content with ease. Our primary focus was to ensure that the users could easily find and access live programmes and be aware of the upcoming shows, even if they missed any of the previous ones.

To accomplish this, we included a dedicated carousel on the top of the page, showcasing the best prime evening programmes. Additionally, we provided a list of programmes organized by channel, enabling users to access live and upcoming programmes effortlessly. The emphasis was on making it easy for users to quickly jump onto live programmes while also being informed about what's coming up next.

Through our design approach and user research, we aimed to make it simple for users to schedule their preferred programmes during prime time, ensuring that they never miss their favourite shows. The outcome of our efforts was a user-centric design that enhanced the user experience and enabled them to navigate through live and upcoming programmes with ease.

Solution

To solve the challenge of letting users discover what's going on live on iPlayer, we implemented a clear and visually appealing carousel at the top of the page that provides a quick and easy overview of the best prime time evening programs. This carousel not only attracts the user's attention but also highlights the most popular programs that are currently live.

To enable users to jump quickly to live programs and know what's coming up next, we included a prominently displayed section that shows what's on now and what will be on next. This feature helps users to stay up to date with the latest content and avoid missing out on their favorite programs.

Additionally, we provided a comprehensive list of programs arranged by channel, making it easier for users to browse and find the content they want to watch. This allows users to easily access a variety of programs and view what's coming up next, ensuring they can plan their viewing schedules accordingly.

Overall, our solution focuses on providing a user-friendly and intuitive interface that allows users to effortlessly navigate the platform and stay up to date with the latest content, helping them to make the most of their viewing experience on iPlayer.

The Project

Approach

Research

During the initial phase of the project, my team and I collaborated closely with the marketing team to understand their requirements and goals for the BBC TV Home Page. We conducted an in-depth analysis of the existing data and research reports to gain insights into user behaviors and preferences when it comes to discovering and watching live TV programs on the iPlayer platform.

To further validate our assumptions, we conducted extensive user research using various qualitative and quantitative research methods, including surveys, user interviews, and usability testing. We recruited a diverse group of users with varying levels of experience and preferences for watching live TV programs on the iPlayer platform.

Through this research, we were able to identify several pain points and areas of improvement for the iPlayer TV guide. Specifically, we found that users had difficulty discovering and navigating to live TV programs and finding what's on next. We also discovered that users often struggled to schedule and plan their viewing experience, particularly during prime evening hours.

Based on these insights, we developed several design concepts and wireframes that aimed to address these issues and improve the overall user experience of the iPlayer TV guide. We tested these concepts with our user group, and based on their feedback, we refined our designs to create a final prototype.

The final solution that we delivered included a clear overview of the best prime evening programs through a prominent carousel at the top of the page. We also included a list of programs listed by channel, making it easy for users to navigate to their preferred channels and find the programs they want to watch.

Additionally, we focused on what's on now and what will be on next, making it easy for users to quickly jump to live programs and plan their viewing experience. Overall, our research and design efforts resulted in an improved user experience for the iPlayer TV guide, making it easier and more enjoyable for users to discover and watch live TV programs on the platform.
